The 2017 Colorado Wheat Variety Survey was released on Feb 13. Survey results show that CSU-developed wheat varieties account for nearly 67% of the 2.2 million acres of winter wheat in Colorado. The top four varieties on the survey and nine of the top 12 were CSU-developed varieties. Hard white wheat acreage, estimated at 11.4% of the total, is strong likely due to price premiums in the market for varieties such as Snowmass and Sunshine.

During the winter months, John Stromberger coordinates wheat quality evaluations in the CSU Wheat Quality Lab. These evaluations include small-scale predictive testing, such as mixographs and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) analysis, as well as full-scale milling and baking tests. This information is used to inform selection decisions next summer as well as help to build genomic selection prediction models for wheat quality characteristics.
The 2017 Colorado Wheat Field Day schedule has been announced. Field days are an excellent opportunity for producers and industry professionals to see available varieties and promising experimental lines under real world conditions. CSU and Colorado Wheat representatives will be on hand to provide information and answer questions. In most cases a complimentary meal or refreshments will also be provided. We appreciate the gracious assistance of our cooperating producers that host the trials and these Field Days.

Our spring crossing block is in full swing in the CSU Greenhouse. Greenhouse manager Scott Seifert will be making nearly 600 “single crosses” using about 60 elite parents. These will be harvested in June and planted at Fort Collins in September. Key priorities for this particular crossing cycle include wheat stem sawfly resistance, herbicide tolerance, and end-use quality for both hard red and hard white winter wheat. Many of the crosses will enter a fast track program through either doubled haploid generation or single seed descent in the greenhouse.
